Seals (lat. sigillum from signum, "sign") were used from ancient times until today to sign letters, contracts or other official documents.

The pointed shape of this seal was used in the 12th and 13th century AD, particularly by cleric people of churches, monastaries etc. The christian motif of Mary and child was also used by members of the christian knight orders like the knights templar or the Johanniter order.

Official seals usually were rather large and were often accompanied at the backside with small secret seals, if the document was very important. The small seal stamps were carried as rings or pendants only for the use of it´s owner. This secret seals (or contra-seals) became independent seals not before the 15th century.

The original of this seal pendant was reconstructed by courtesy of the Frosin collection, Germany. Handcrafted from high quality 925 silver, leather thong included. Size ca. 32 x 20 mm.
