Large Lar Statuette

The Lares played an important role in Roman cult. They were protective deities who were worshipped in many forms. They had travel routes, fields, houses, cities and even entire states under their care. In particular, however, they protected the house and its inhabitants, as they were closely connected with the deceased ancestors. These so-called Lares familiares were worshipped in small temples (Lararien), either as elaborate portraits painted on the walls, or even as real statues made of metal or clay erected in small temples. Often the lares were associated with other deity figures, who traditionally had a connection to the family and the head of the household.

When he was graced with offerings, the lar began to dance and fulfilled the wishes and hopes of his patrons. For this reason, the statuette, a replica of an almost 2000-year-old original, holds an offering bowl (patera) in its outstretched hand. In his raised right hand he holds a cornucopia, ready to pour out good luck and blessings for family and home.

The lar is handcrafted from solid bronze. Delivery with certificate, height with base approx. 130mm.
