Ancient symbolism – Cupid, the dolphin and love
In ancient mythology, Cupid (Greek: Eros) embodies the divine power of love and desire – a power that moves gods and mortals alike. His mount, the dolphin, was a highly revered symbol of life, salvation and divine guidance in the Roman and Greek worlds.
The dolphin in the ancient world
The dolphin was considered a friend of humans and a favourite of the gods. Numerous myths tell of how dolphins rescued shipwrecked sailors or carried souls across the sea of eternity. In Mediterranean art, it often appears as a companion to the sea god Poseidon/Neptune, but also in close connection with the goddess of love, Venus (Aphrodite).
Since Venus was born from the sea, the dolphin was her natural animal attribute – a symbol of erotic attraction, beauty and sensual awakening.
Cupid and the dolphin
The depiction of the young Cupid on a dolphin combines two divine spheres:
love (Cupid) and the sea (Venus).
It represents the impetuous, playful power of love, which, like the waves of the ocean, is both gentle and powerful. In Roman art, this combination was often used to express the life-affirming and uncontrollable nature of desire.
In villas, thermal baths and gardens, depictions of Cupid and dolphins adorned mosaics, murals and jewellery – as symbols of both luck and love.
