Antinous Balsamarium
A balsamarium is a small vessel that was often used in antiquity to store scented oils, ointments and other cosmetic or ritual substances. These vessels were often artistically designed and served both practical and decorative purposes in Roman everyday culture.
Many balsamaria are figurative, often in the form of a youthful bust of the deified Antinous.
Antinous was a young man from Bithynia (in modern-day Turkey) who became known as the favourite companion of the Roman emperor Hadrian. After his tragic death, which probably occurred around 130 AD, Hadrian had numerous statues and busts made in his memory, which led to a veritable cult around Antinous. He was equated with a god and worshipped as a symbol of youthful beauty and transience.
This exquisite piece is handcrafted from real, solid bronze and, like the originals, has a lid, a stand and a handle. The balsamarium is produced using the elaborate lost wax process in hollow casting, which gives it impressive attention to detail and durability.
The depictions of Antinous date back to the 2nd century AD and reflect the artistic style of the time. The ointment jar is not only a piece of jewellery for lovers of ancient art, but also a testimony to the rich culture and aesthetics of Roman antiquity.
As the production of this ornate ointment jar requires a great deal of care and time, it will only be made once your order has been received. The estimated delivery time is therefore around 4 to 6 weeks.
