This baldric fitting is shaped like a beneficiarius´ spearhead. The beneficarii were a special force of the roman auxilliary army. The members were withdrawn from the regular troops and appointed to special tasks. The were used at the governor´s headquarter staff, for police tasks and for supervision of streets and crossroads. To prevent bribery and corruption, the soldiers were on duty only for 6 months before they had to return to their troops.
The fitting bases on a well preseved original of the late 2nd or 3rd century complete with a ring fastening at the backside. Handcrafted from bronze, length ca. 90 mm.
