Wedding and Friendship Rings

Since ancient times, we have known the custom of expressing one's attachment to a loved one with a finger ring. The motif of interlocking hands (Dextrarum Iunctio) symbolises the handshake that was customary at a Roman marriage.

Rings with this motif can still be found in large numbers as so-called feud rings in the Middle Ages and in modern times. The term feud refers to the Latin fides, fidelity. Another term used in this context is Handtruwe, hand fidelity between fiancées, spouses and relatives.
