Replica of an Etruscan sanguisuga brooch with a long pin holder

This exceptional replica of an Etruscan sanguisuga brooch is based on an ancient original from the collection of the Louvre Museum. The historical original is thought to have originated in northern Italy, although the exact location where it was found is no longer known.

Even at first glance, the distinctive, strongly curved clasp catches the eye. Its shape is reminiscent of a leech – hence the Italian name “Sanguisuga”. Delicate geometric grooves and linear decorations structure the surface and lend the brooch that serene elegance which characterises many Etruscan bronze objects.

Particularly striking is the long needle holder, which ends in two stylised lion heads. Animal-head finials such as these are a typical motif in Etruscan art and reflect the influence of Oriental imagery, which shaped Etruscan jewellery styles in the 7th century BC.

The primer was handcrafted in our own workshop using the traditional lost-wax casting technique. This method, which has been in use since ancient times, allows even the finest details to be rendered in a three-dimensional and lifelike manner. As a result, each piece has an authentic feel and its own unique character.

Like its historical counterpart, this brooch is fully functional and can actually be used to fasten a garment. In ancient times, sanguisuga brooches were worn primarily by women, although archaeological finds show that they occasionally appear in male burials as well.

Whether as a collector’s item, an authentic accessory for re-enactment and living history, or an extravagant brooch with an archaeological background – this fibula combines traditional craftsmanship with the fascinating design language of the Etruscan world.

Dating of the historical model

The type of Sanguisuga brooch with a long pin belongs to the so-called Etruscan Orientalising period and is generally dated to the 7th century BC (c. 700–600 BC).
