Etruscan belt hook with animal heads

Replica of an artefact from the Louvre

This impressive replica of an Etruscan belt hook is based on an ancient original from the collection of the Louvre Museum. The historical piece originates from northern Italy (Etruria) and is one of the characteristic belt fastenings of the Etruscan Orientalising period.

The hook is striking for its powerful design: three sculpted predator heads – presumably lions – originally adorned the centrepiece of the clasp. On the archaeological original, one of these heads has broken off over the millennia; the reconstruction revives the original design and shows the composition with all three animal heads, as it was once intended.

The central perforated panel with round openings gives the piece a dynamic, almost architectural structure. It is flanked by two rectangular slits through which the leather belt is threaded. The result is a functional yet highly decorative fastening – a fine example of how naturally craftsmanship, symbolism and everyday life were intertwined in Etruscan art.

The belt hook is handcrafted from genuine bronze in our own workshop. We use the traditional lost-wax casting method, a technique that has been in use since ancient times. This gives each replica a vibrant finish and fine details that closely resemble the historical original.

The hook is fully functional and can actually be used to fasten a belt. At the same time, the piece is ideal as a collector’s item, for re-enactment and living history or as an unusual historical accessory.
When closed, the piece measures approximately 90 x 63 x 20 mm and is suitable for belt widths of up to approximately 40 mm.

Dating of the historical model

Typologically, this belt hook belongs to the Orientalising period of Etruscan culture and is usually dated to the 7th century BC (c. 725–600 BC). During this period, numerous artistically decorated bronze belt fittings were produced, often featuring depictions of animals that symbolised strength, protection and prestige.

The Etruscans – Culture before Rome

The Etruscans were one of the most significant cultures of ancient central Italy. Their heartland lay in Etruria, today’s Tuscany, northern Latium and parts of Umbria. The culture developed from the Villanova tradition of the early Iron Age and flourished particularly between the 9th and 5th centuries BC

The Etruscans were master metalworkers, traders and city-builders. Their cities – including Tarquinia, Cerveteri and Vulci – were prosperous centres with extensive trade links throughout the Mediterranean. Their art reflects influences from Greece and the Near East, which they nevertheless blended into a style all of their own.

The Etruscans were also of great significance to later Roman culture. Many elements of early Roman religion, architecture and symbolism can be traced back to Etruscan models. Even some of Rome’s early kings were descended from Etruscan families. The Etruscans thus had a decisive influence on the cultural foundations upon which the Roman Empire later developed.
