Large brooch (fibula) Waldgirmes
This elaborate brooch, made up of several parts, is a faithful replica of a Roman brooch that was discovered in ancient Waldgirmes (near Lahnau, Hesse). The piece of jewellery is made of authentic bronze and is decorated with colourful inlays of genuine enamel and natural coral. Each brooch is traditionally handcrafted in our workshop and can also be customised in individual colour combinations on request.
The slightly larger diameter of around 50 mm makes this brooch particularly versatile - whether as an elegant brooch in a modern style, for historical garments or for educational purposes. Thanks to the robust bronze pin, it is also suitable as a cloak brooch for heavy fabrics and is fully functional.
Historical background: The Roman settlement of Waldgirmes
Waldgirmes was an early Roman settlement dating from around 4 BC to 16 AD and is one of the most important archaeological sites in Germany. The settlement consisted of a forum with a basilica, residential and craft areas and proves that the Romans not only had a military but also a civilian presence in Germania.
Particularly noteworthy is the discovery of a fragmented gilded equestrian statue, presumably depicting Emperor Augustus. This underlines the political importance of Waldgirmes as a possible administrative centre of a planned Roman province in Germania. The settlement was abandoned after the defeat of Varus (9 AD) and is therefore important evidence of Rome's failed civilisation policy east of the Rhine.
The original of this brooch is now kept in the Saalburg Museum (Taunus), a reconstructed Roman fort on the Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Saalburg is one of the best-researched Roman sites in Germany and provides vivid insights into life on the frontier of the empire.
This brooch combines archaeological authenticity with precision craftsmanship - a fascinating piece of jewellery for history enthusiasts, re-enactors and lovers of ancient art.
