Germanic belt buckle - Our replica

This replica of this Germanic belt buckle / type Krempenschnalle is based on a find from Hohenferchesar. Plate, shackle and spike are elaborately decorated and made of solid cast bronze, which is also designed for heavier use. The size of the Germanic belt buckle is approx. 80 x 43mm. The buckle is an ideal fit for a belt width of 30mm, although the end of the belt will need to be cut slightly narrower to fit through the bar.

Germanic belt buckle - The original

The original of our Germanic belt buckle (Krempenschnalle) comes from the cemetery of Hohenferchsar, a district of the town of Havelsee in the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark in the state of Brandenburg. Around the Gallberg there are several cemeteries from the Bronze Age to the late Roman Empire. The two directly neighbouring cemeteries of Hohenferchesar and Fohrde were excavated rather carelessly at the beginning of the 20th century, so that many finds have been lost and it is also not clear whether, instead of the 2 neighbouring cemeteries, it was not in fact a large contiguous cemetery with an estimated 600 burials.
The preserved grave inventories can be dated to the B2 period, predominantly to B2b. The period of occupation is thus estimated to be between 100 and 170 AD. Apart from predominantly Elbe-Germanic elements, some East-Germanic influences can be detected in the burial rites, the pottery and certain forms of brooches, buckles and strap tongues.
The Germanic buckle is a brim buckle from grave no. 378. Due to the grave goods in the form of various hair and sewing needles and the absence of weapons, a female burial can be assumed. However, since brim buckles are also found in men's graves, it is plausible that this Germanic belt buckle was used by both sexes. Figure 2 shows the grave inventory.
