Functionality of a Roman lock with sliding bolt

• Slide bolt (horizontal)
  The long, horizontal bolt is the actual locking element. It can only be moved when it is no longer blocked by vertical locking bolts.

• Locking bolt (vertical)
  When locked, several vertical locking bolts (pins) fall through openings in the sliding bolt and thus block its movement.

• Key with prongs
  The antique key has several prongs that fit exactly to the locking bolts. It is inserted from below or from the side (depending on the lock design).

• Opening mechanism
  If the key is inserted and lifted correctly, its prongs push the locking bolts into a higher position. This releases the sliding bolt.
