The Parthenon

Probably the most famous architectural monument of ancient Greece, the ruins of the Parthenon, has been enthroned on the Acropolis near Athens for 2,500 years. The Parthenon is a temple that the Greeks built after their victory over Persia in the 5th century BC and dedicated to the goddess Athena as thanks. Parthenon means "maiden's chamber". The term is thought to derive from a small room in the temple where four selected young girls served the goddess Athena.
The temple was built from marble in 15 years. It was about 70 meters long and about 31 meters wide. A building surrounded by columns was built on the three-tiered foundation. The pillars formed the ring hall and the vestibule. There were two rooms in the building: the maiden's chamber and the cella, the sanctuary of the temple. A frieze above the pillars of the building showed the assembly of the gods and a procession to the feast of Athena, the so-called Panathenaia. Outside the temple was a frieze with scenes from the Persian Wars and processions. Both friezes were colored. Presumably the colors blue and red were used. The gables of the temple showed scenes such as the birth of Athens or her battle with Poseidon over Attica.
In the middle of the cella was the cult image of the goddess Athena. The statue, about 11.5 meters high, was made of gold and ivory. In the left hand the statue held a shield, in the right a figure of the goddess Nike. The Athena statue was dressed by the girls in richly decorated robes and a golden breast skin (Greek: Aigis). According to legend, the aigis served the gods to create thunderstorms, but also stood for protection. This is why the phrase "to stand under someone's aegis (protection)" is still derived today.
In the 5th century AD the temple was converted into a church. The inner pillars and some of the walls of the cella were removed. The statue of Athena and other sculptures disappeared. Her whereabouts have long been unclear. Under Ottoman rule from 1456 the Parthenon served as a mosque and in the 17th century as a powder room. During a war against Venice, the ammunition stored there exploded and severely damaged the building. Parts of the statue and a few other sculptures were rediscovered in the early 19th century. Since then they have been exhibited in the national museums in London, Paris and Copenhagen.
There are numerous replicas of the Parthenon around the world. In Nashville, Tennessee (USA), there has been a replica made of plaster of paris, wood and brick since 1897, which was renewed from concrete and colored in 1920. In 1990 a copy of the Athena statue was added. The Walhalla in Bavaria is also modeled on the Parthenon. In 1842 the building was built and the facade was designed in the classicism style. In 2016/2017, as part of the documenta 14 art exhibition in Kassel, a Parthenon was created from censored books from all over the world.
