Jupiter amulet pendant - Our mini phalera
This exquisite pendant is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and historical inspiration. The sculpted portrait of the Roman god Jupiter, crafted in great detail in the form of a miniaturised phalera, combines ancient aesthetics with modern craftsmanship. Phaleras were round ornamental discs that were awarded as military decorations (dona militaria) in ancient Rome and stood for honour, courage and divine assistance.
Handcrafted in our own workshop
Each pendant is unique, lovingly handcrafted from solid 925 silver and inspired by Roman motifs. The image is based on the famous "Zeus of Otricoli", an ancient Roman bust that was found during excavations in Otricoli in 1775 and is now on display in the Vatican Museum. This bust is thought to be a Roman copy of a Hellenistic original, possibly the statue of Zeus by Phidias in Olympia.
The motif: Jupiter, the highest Roman god
Jupiter, the highest of the Roman gods, was the ruler of the sky, lightning and thunder. He embodied power, justice and order and was worshipped as the patron saint of the Roman state. His Greek counterpart is Zeus, who was also regarded as the father of the gods and ruler of Olympus. While Zeus was often portrayed as impulsive and passionate in Greek mythology, Jupiter symbolised authority, law and the preservation of divine order for the Romans.
His temple on the Capitoline Hill in Rome was the religious centre of the city and his worship played a central role in the public and private lives of the Romans.
Jupiter as leader of the legions
Jupiter also had a special significance for the Roman military. As Iupiter Optimus Maximus ("Jupiter, the best and greatest"), he was regarded as the divine leader of the legions. Before every battle, the Roman commanders sacrificed to him to ask for his blessing and assistance. The eagle, the sacred animal of Jupiter, was the highest symbol of the Roman legions and served as a standard (aquila). The loss of the eagle in battle was considered the greatest disgrace, while its protection was seen as a sign of divine favour.
Jupiter's love affairs and offspring
Jupiter was not only known for his power, but also for his numerous love affairs. In mythology, he is often depicted as a charming seducer who appeared in many guises and disguises to win the hearts of mortal women and nymphs. These unions produced many famous offspring, including Hercules, the son of Alcmene, and Minerva, who was born from Jupiter's head. These stories reflect not only Jupiter's divine power, but also his connection to the human world.
Symbolism and meaning
The pendant with the portrait of Jupiter is more than just a piece of jewellery - it is a symbol of power, wisdom and divine assistance. It is a reminder of the values of antiquity and the importance of authority and justice. At the same time, it is a statement of love for history and craftsmanship.
