Bronze Age Wheel Pendant
Wheel amulets belong to the typical amulet forms of the Bronze Age. They can probably be attributed to a long-forgotten sun cult.
The wheel pendants are classified according to the spoke scheme (A-H) worked out by Friedrich Holste (1908-1942) and the types named by Georg Kossack (1923-2004). They are a long-lasting decorative form of the Middle Bronze Age tumulus and urnfield culture, produced in a bronze casting process.
Cast in stone moulds in one or two shells, they come, like the wheel pins, in four-, six-, eight- or twelve-spoked varieties, (also as double-wheel pendants) with and without eyelets. They were found mainly in France and northern Switzerland, but also in the Balkans and the Swabian Alb, in graves, depots and settlements. Wheel pendants were worn on the arms, on the chest and on the pelvis, as far as can be deduced from what was found in the body graves.
