The Germanic characters were more than just profane letters. Their origin and meaning was always linked to mythical ideas and belief in the Nordic gods.
The trust in their magical effectiveness is shown in preserved spells and inscriptions on stones and everyday objects. The knowledge of the runes and their effectiveness was only known to a circle of initiated people.

It was not until the time of the Vikings that the runes developed into a utility script, after various alphabets and spellings had developed over the centuries.
The runes are called "Futhark" after the first letters of the Germanic runic alphabet.
