Statuette of ROMA VICTRIX

The statuette of the Roman city goddess ROMA is handmade from solid bronze and inspired by a find from the Getty Museum.

Particularly noteworthy is the fact that Roma, the personification and patron goddess of the ancient city, is depicted not as a noble queen, but as a defiant Amazon with a lance. The small Victoria in her outstretched hand makes her ROMA VICTRIX, victorious Rome.

The figure wears a helmet and a short robe that leaves her right breast exposed – features that are strongly influenced by Greek classical art and, in particular, depictions of Amazons.

Her striking pose and the position of her left hand clearly indicate that she originally held a lance. This makes it highly likely that she can be identified as the goddess Roma. It is also possible that she represents Virtus, the personification of bravery, but in that case the figure would be holding a sword as an attribute.

The original has a fastening on the back, which shows that it may have been part of a larger relief ensemble – presumably as an appliqué on a carriage or a piece of furniture. Together with other figures (including Ceres and a relief with two men), it once formed a decorative unit.

Each statuette is handcrafted, creating a solid, detailed piece of history and mythology that combines timeless strength and elegance.
