Replica of an ancient brothel or gaming token made of brass bronze or solid 925 silver
This faithful replica of Spintria No. I recreates a rare and fascinating object from everyday Roman life.
Handcrafted from gold-coloured brass bronze based on archaeological models, it conveys the authentic impression of those small tokens that were in use in the early imperial period.
Alternatively, the Spintria No. I is also available in solid 925 sterling silver – as an elegant, wearable piece of jewellery that harmoniously combines ancient symbolism and modern craftsmanship.
On request, the piece can be fitted with a fine eyelet, making it ideal as a pendant, amulet or prop for historical re-enactments.
The front shows an erotic scene, as is characteristic of the original spintriae.
The back bears the Roman numeral I (1), part of the well-known numbered series, several examples of which have been preserved in Pompeii and Herculaneum.
With a diameter of approximately 22 mm, this replica follows exactly the dimensions and typical design of the ancient originals.
Historical background
The so-called spintriae are among the most fascinating and at the same time most enigmatic small finds from the 1st century AD.
They are mostly made of bronze or brass and feature erotic depictions on the front, while the reverse side bears a number between I and XVI.
Their original function is still not entirely clear today.
Numerous researchers see them as tokens for brothels, which enabled discreet payment – a pragmatic solution to keep coins bearing the image of the emperor away from morally offensive situations.
Other interpretations suggest that they were gaming or social tokens, possibly used in convivial or erotic games in the villas of the Roman upper class.
The spintriae thus provide a rare insight into the permissive, humorous and at the same time cultured side of Roman society.
They show how art, eroticism and everyday life were interwoven in ancient times as a matter of course.
A tangible piece of Roman cultural history
The Spintria No. I brings Roman life to life.
The combination of archaeological precision, aesthetic appeal and historical authenticity makes this object an extraordinary asset for collectors, re-enactors, teachers and museum educators.
Whether as a scientifically accurate replica, a visual aid in the classroom or an artistically crafted piece of silver jewellery, the Spintria No. I is an impressive, tangible testimony to Roman history and culture.
