The story of Cupid and Psyche

The story of Cupid and Psyche is a famous tale within the novel "The Golden Ass" by Apuleius. It tells of the beautiful mortal Psyche, whose beauty is so overwhelming that people no longer pay any attention to Venus, the goddess of love. Out of jealousy, Venus instructs her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a terrible man.

Instead, Cupid falls in love with Psyche himself and secretly arranges their marriage without her knowing his identity. Every night Cupid visits Psyche, but warns her never to see him in the light. Driven by curiosity and convinced by the advice of her jealous sisters, one night Psyche lights up Cupid's face with an oil lamp while he is asleep. A drop of hot oil falls on him, causing him to wake up and hurry away disappointed.

Psyche embarks on a long and difficult journey to win Cupid back. She undergoes several dangerous tasks set for her by Venus. With the help of gods and animals, she overcomes these trials. Finally, Cupid, now convinced of her love, appears and asks Jupiter to transform Psyche into an immortal goddess. Psyche thus becomes Cupid's eternal mate and the story ends with their wedding on Mount Olympus.

The story of Cupid and Psyche symbolises the soul (Psyche), which achieves immortality and union with divine love (Cupid) through challenges and trials.

The goddess Psyche as a butterfly

In ancient mythology and symbolism, Psyche is often associated with a butterfly, which has several meanings. The name "psyche" itself comes from ancient Greek and means "soul" or "breath". Butterflies are often symbols of transformation, rebirth and immortal souls, which are in line with the concept of Psyche.

In the story of Cupid and Psyche, Psyche is characterised as a beauty that goes through a journey of self-discovery and transformation. Like a butterfly that goes through various stages - from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to winged insect - Psyche undergoes various trials and challenges that ultimately make her an immortal goddess.

Additionally, Psyche is often depicted in art with butterfly wings to reinforce her connection to the soul and transformation. These representations symbolise that the soul is light and free, similar to a butterfly, and thus embody the aspects of love and spirituality in Greek mythology.
