Denarius Vespasian Judaea Capta

Copy of a Roman silver coin (denarius) with the portrait of Emperor Vespasian (Titus Flavius Vespasianus), who ruled between 69 and 79 AD.

The reverse of the coin depicts a victory sign made of captured weapons (tropaion), below which is a bound person with the signature "Judaea". This coin was minted and distributed after the defeat of the first Jewish revolt (66 - 70 AD). The great Jewish War against the Romans began in Judea in 66 AD, triggered by state and religious oppression, and was decided in 70 with the conquest of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple. The war was only finally ended in 73/74 with the fall of the fortress of Masada.
