Roman Spoon, Silver

Our reconstruction is based on a find from the Landesmuseum Mainz from the 2nd to 3rd century.
To prevent the formation of toxic metal oxides, we make the spoon by hand exclusively in solid 925 silver. Length approx. 17 cm.

Roman Spoons

Roman spoons are divided in the two groups of ligulae and cochlearia. The first are recognizable with a large oval spoon bowl and a blunted grip. Most likely they were used to perpare and serve the dishes. The smaller cochlearia had a smaller spoon bowl and a thin, pointed grip, an ancient substitute of the modern fork. According to the name, derived from "cochlea" (the snail), the small spoons were originally used primarily for the consumption of Roman snails.

They were used as the common tablespoons and are found everywhere in the Roman Empire as well as in the free Germania.
