Rungholt - the Atlantis of the North

Rungholt was once a lively and important trading center on the North Sea. Residents became prospering by the trade with salt, wool, amber and grain. According to the legend, it was the arrogance of the wealthy Rungholt people who neglected their faith and were swallowed by the sea as God's punishment. Probably in January 1362, Rungholt was destroyed by a flood and disappeared in the waters of the North Sea - and also of the maps of that time. The memory of Rungholt remained, the enchanted place in the depths of the sea, and was kept alive by inspired poets.  Researchers were inspired for generations to look for the exact location of the sunken city. Sometimes, ceramics, bricks, remnants of wells, wood beams, and numerous small finds were discovered at the shores of the North Sea. Today, it is certain that Rungholt was located next to some other sunken settlements between Pellworm and the Isle of Nordstrand, north of the holm Südfall.
More informations about research and numerous finds from Rungholt are presented at the NordseeMuseum in Husum today.
