Silver-Gilt S-Brooch with Garnet
Early-medieval S-Brooch of the Merovingian period, inspired by a find from Frankfurt / Germany. The s-brooch (or s-fibula) is made of solid silver and is gilded with 24 karat gold. The inserts in the eyes, in contrast to the original, are made of real garnet. The pin on the backside is functional and suitable both for historical dresses as well as for modern use as an extraordinary brooch or necktie pin.
Merovingian S-Fibula or S-Brooch from Frankfurt / Main
In the old city center of Frankfurt, on the hill of the St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, there are some buildings that point to the use of the site already in Roman times. After the fall of the Limes around 260 AD, Alamans settled here in the late 3rd to early 4th century, until finally Franks took over the rule. At the time of the Merovingian era, they erected a royal court on the cathedral hill, which in the Carolingian period was followed by a royal hall and an imperial palace in the Middle Ages. The importance of the settlement in the Merovingian period is underlined by the exceptionally richly endowed funeral of a five-year-old girl, which was discovered in excavations under the ground of the cathedral.
The settlement on the cathedral´s hill was connected to a grave field near the former Westbahnhof. The S-brooches originate from a private collection of 1854, bought in 1941 by the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Frankfurt.
The S-Brooches are of a type which is common in the first half of the 6th century, especially at the Langobards in Pannonia, Central Germany, Bohemia and Moravia. They were used as small pins for garments or to fix a head-shoulder cloth. The original brooches are made of gilded silver with black niello inserts in the eyes.
