Apron Button with Lunula End Pendant, Bronze
Small rectangular apron strap end with hinged terminal pendant. Decoration of the pendent leather straps of the military belt of the early roman empire. Based on a find from Vindonissa, 1st century AD.
Apron Button with Lunula End Pendant
The aprons at the early roman military belts were decorated with that kind of studs. The soldiers usually did not wear any trousers, and so the apron straps prevented a "deeper look" under the tunic, particularly when seated. When the trouser fashion became popular in the roman army after the late 1st century, the aprons seem to disappear. The original of our reproduction was found at Vindonissa, Switzerland.
The buttons are casted in a complicated and costly technique with wax patterns, abrasived and polished by hand. Two buttons on the backside make it easy to fit the plates on a leather belt. Size ca. 2,5 x 2,5 cm plus pendant.
