Germanic belt from Thorsberg

Belt buckle and decorative fittings after a find from the Thorsberg bog. The replicas are very detailed, the buckle alone consists of 19 individual parts.

In contrast to the extremely fragile original (the thickness of the sheet metal is only 0.5 mm), the reproduction is somewhat more solidly made and can be used without restriction for everyday use.
Our handmade silver buckle and the decorative fittings have inlays of gold-coloured brass bronze.

The delivery is complete with special rivets and instructions, without leather. The length of the buckle is approx. 65mm, the ideal belt width is 40mm.

Germanic Belt from Thorsberg

The original of this buckle comes from the great bog find of Thorsberg, where vast quantities of military equipment were sacrificed to the Germanic gods. Research assumes that Germanic tribes of the Angles laid down the weapons of defeated enemies here as a way of thanking them for their victory.

Due to the shape of the shackle, this buckle is counted among the type of omega buckles. Omega buckles appear as early as the 1st century in the Roman province (Augsburg, Trier) and are also made by Germanic craftsmen in the 2nd century (level C1) at the latest.
Klaus Raddatz describes this piece in detail in his 1957 publication on the Thorsberg belt parts: "In terms of type and design, this is the most precious set of this kind that has so far come to light from the Roman Imperial period in free Germania."

Most likely, the buckle with the elaborately crafted decorative fittings belonged to a sword belt.
