Celtic Belt Chain, Bronze

I have reconstructed this massive belt chain on the basis of different fragments, paying special attention to a find from grave 13 of the celtic cemetery from Giengen. The original is exhibited in the Württembergisches Landesmuseum in Stuttgart and, based on the find of a small Celtic gold coin, dates roughly to the period between 270 and 250 AD.

Such massive belt chains came into fashion in the 3rd century as a component of women's costumes and thus date as leading forms to the Middle Latène Period. Their distribution covers a large area between France and Hungary.

The Celtic belt chain has a standard length for a body circumference of 70 to approx. 110 cm, as the circumference can be reduced by hooking the animal head hook into different rings. If desired, the chain can be lengthened as desired by inserting additional links. The connecting rings between the individual elements are additionally soldered. A truly magnificent piece of celtic art!
