Small Roman Spoon, Silver

Our reconstructed cochlear is based on an original find from the Limes region in the province of Upper Germany (germania superior). To minimize the creation of toxic metal oxydes, we produce the spoon exclusively in high quality, massive 925 silver. Length ca. 14,5 cm.

Roman Spoons

Roman spoons are divided in the two groups of ligulae and cochlearia. The first are recognizable with a large oval spoon bowl and a blunted grip. Most likely they were used to perpare and serve the dishes. The smaller cochlearia had a smaller spoon bowl and a thin, pointed grip, an ancient substitute of the modern fork. According to the name, derived from "cochlea" (the snail), the small spoons were originally used primarily for the consumption of Roman snails.

They were used as the common tablespoons and are found everywhere in the Roman Empire as well as in the free Germania.
