Roman Mask Padlocks
These small padlocks are outstanding works of art and examples of Roman craftsmanship. Their origins probably date back to Celtic times, as the typical design of early mask representations suggests. Due to a concentration of finds, ancient Auquileia seems to have been a centre of production. About 160 specimens are known, and no mask cover is identical to any other specimen.
The small locks do not offer much protection against brute force, but are very suitable for protecting boxes, cupboards or purses from quick access or prying eyes.
