Gotland is the second largest island in the Baltic Sea with an area of almost 3000 square kilometres. Its favourable location on the trade routes between Scandinavia and the far reaches of Russia all the way to Byzantium were decisive for the wealth of large parts of the population in the Viking Age. With around 700 treasure finds from the Viking Age, Gotland has a density of finds that is unparalleled anywhere in the world.
Economically, the island was anything but isolated, but nevertheless its own traditional costume culture developed among its inhabitants, some of whom distinguished themselves from the other Scandinavian settlements with special forms of jewellery.

South of Visby's old town, archaeologists discovered the "Kopparsvik" burial ground with around 400 burials from the 9th to 10th centuries. Although mainly men were buried in the northern part of the cemetery, weapon grave goods are very rare. Some of the dead were buried in the prone position, which basically speaks for an irregular burial ritual. Other graves, however, are richly endowed with grave goods. The strap end dates from the 9th to 10th century.
