The fibulae of this type developed from germanic trumpet brooches. They were popular among the germanic peoples at the river Elbe in northern Germany, where they were only used by women. But many specimens were also found in military locations at the Limes. The earliest finds date to the flavian-trajanic period in the late 1st century, they were popular until the mid of the 2nd century AD.

Find from the Saalburg-fort in Germany, Inv. No. S. 00/8. Copied with kindly permission of the Saalburg-Museum, size ca. 4cm. Our reconstruction is made from real bronze with fully operational spring pin.

Literature: A. Böhme-Schönberger, Die Fibeln der Kastelle Saalburg und Zugmantel, In: Saalburg-Jahrbuch XXIX (Berlin 1972).
