Roman Penannular Brooches

Roman penannular or ring brooches are a type of ancient brooch that were used to fasten and close items of clothing in antiquity. They basically had the function of safety pins.

The penannular fibulae were so named because of their distinctive design: they consisted of a ring-shaped bow or bow to which a pin was connected, which could be moved around the bow to hold the fabric in place. These brooches were available in different sizes and styles, and some had elaborate decorations or inscriptions that often reflected the wearer's social status or taste.

Roman ring brooches or fibulae were an important part of Roman clothing and were made in many different shapes and materials, including bronze, iron and silver. They were widespread and worn by people from different social classes. Archaeological finds of ring brooches have allowed researchers to learn more about Roman clothing and artistic preferences of the time.

Penannular brooches with a base attachment are a form of ring brooch that appears from the 3rd century onwards and can be found in numerous finds in military camps and civilian settlements of that time.
