Thor's Hammer Amulet Pendant Sejerby

Thor's hammer amulet, inspired by a find from Serjerby, Denmark. The original dates back to the ninth century AD.
Remarkable is the simple design of this hammer amulet, which makes it different from richly ornamented and outstanding specimens. Not only for historical representations, but also for everyday use, this antique amulet has an almost modern elegance with a pleasant size. The suspension is made by a sturdy fastening ring, in which the chain or the ribbon can be attached. When using a chain, we recommend an authentic,  splitted chain, which is attached with rings. We will gladly take on the assembly. A leather strap can be attached with a loop simply.

The Thor's hammer measures 24 x 35 mm. The amulet is made from solid 925 sterling silver.

Thorshammer - amulets, origin and meaning

The past, and in particular the world of the Vikings, is a charming and fascinating antithesis to our modern times. The past worlds with their cultures, their religions and their principles of life differ significantly from today's everyday life. The Thor's hammer in particular is a powerful symbol, not only for Germanic mythology, but also for the world of the Vikings in general. Numerous finds, from simple pendants made of sheet metal to valuable, richly decorated and sculptured pieces made of precious metal, survived from the time of the Vikings. Today, Thor's hammers as jewellery symbolise the connection to the Viking world and of course still have a function as amulets and lucky charms.

The meaning of the Thor's hammer in the Viking Age itself, on the other hand, does not seem to be so easy to clarify. While today the Thor's hammer is very often worn by men, most verifiable finds of originals come from feminine contexts, i.e. from the burials of women. How is it that such a powerful, magical object of a warlike and pugnacious god was associated with women?
The explanation may be found in the Old Norse song of Thrymr Þrymskviða.

Thor was the powerful son of the All-Father Odin, the god of thunder and protector of the kingdom of the gods Asgard. His magic hammer Mjölnir was a powerful weapon that never missed its target and returned to its owner by itself after being thrown.

One day, however, Thor's hammer Mjölnir was stolen. The giant Thrym had hidden it deep underground and demanded the hand of the goddess Frigga. With the help of Heimdall and his cunning brother Loki, Thor disguised himself as a bride, wearing Frigga's clothes, veil and jewellery. They travelled to Jötunheim, the world of the giants, where the giant welcomed them. Thrym was deceived and placed the hammer on the lap of his supposed bride as a consecration gift. Thor took hold and slew all the giants who had arrived for the wedding celebration.

With this background, the small Thor hammer amulets of the Viking Age seem to be directly related to the wedding. It is plausible that the power of Mjölnir was supposed to bless the marriage and protect the bride and groom from misfortune and disease, just as Thor watched over Asgard with Mjölnir.
