Ankh Pendant - Origins and Information
The Ankh, a cross-shaped symbol, is very common on ancient Egyptian wall paintings and hieroglyphic inscriptions. Other well-known names for this symbol are also Egyptian cross, loop of life, Nile key or Coptic cross. As a hieroglyph of the word "life", the ankh is also called the life cross or life key.
In Egyptian death rituals and in connection with the god of the dead, Anubis, it symbolises the resurrection of the deceased, to whom the ankh is placed in the mouth for this purpose.
From the 1st century AD, Christianity spread from Alexandria all over Egypt. The similarity of the Ankh to the Christian symbol of the cross and also the meaning of redemption and resurrection made the Ankh also known as the christian "Coptic cross" beyond the borders of Egypt.
