Early medieval belt set
Massive Merovingian belt set with braided band decorations in Germanic animal style after an early medieval find from Bavaria. The original piece is stored in the Archäologische Staatssammlung Munich. The buckle belongs to a typical 3-piece belt set, but the other fittings are not preserved in the original. These were produced as ideal reconstructions on the basis of comparative finds and are available separately.
While the counter fitting has a purely decorative function, the back fitting was often used to attach a pouch to the belt in which personal utensils such as a fire club were carried.
The original is made of iron with silver plating and wire inlays, which means that our solid silver version comes closest to the original. However, since solid cast bronze buckles also survive from the same period, our considerably less expensive variant made of genuine solid bronze is also not far from the original pieces. The decorations in Germanic animal style date the Merovingian belt set to the 7th century AD.
Supplied completely ready to assemble with decorated rivets, handmade washers and assembly instructions. Very solidly made, for a belt width of 40mm. Length of the buckle approx. 11cm.
