Decorated Germanic brooch
This extraordinary item is the reconstruction of an original, being part of a private collection. It belogs to the horizon of the rich upperclass-burials of the Hassleben-Leuna-group of the late 3rd and 4th century. The original consists of silver. The double spring spiral is an optical decoration to increase the impression, the functional pin was made from iron. Probably the original pin of silver wire broke and was replaced by a stronger one. We went the same way, left the spring and crafted an separate iron pin, being fully operative even for stronger clothes. Length 65mm.
