Late Roman Large Chip Carved Buckle
This beautifully made wide late roman buckle has got elaborate decorations in chip carved ornamentation. The D-shaped buckle fitting is also richly ornamented with animal head terminals. The back edge is decoratively shaped as mythical creatures that are interpreted as "sea lions". The fully functional reconstruction is based freely on an original find from Enns / Austria, the ancient city of Lauriacum. The three-part set was found in 1964 in a gravel pit near the military camp there. It is dated to the late 4th century AD.
