Plague Cross Pendant, Bronze
Between 1347 and 1350, the Black Death reigned over Europe. Brought in by ships from Asia, the plague was spread by rats whose fleas carried the dangerous germ.
And the more people died, the more rats there were. A third of the western population was wiped out. At the height of the epidemic, mass graves were laid out, coffins were scarce. Simple lead crosses were given to the dead.
The original plague cross is a high-quality piece of work, decorated on both sides with the figure of Mary and Jesus. A small skull at the feet of the crucified indicates the original function. A very rare piece of high quality from the 14th century.
