The card model of the Porta Nigra includes all important details of the ancient roman city gate, which is the symbol of the modern city of Trier. The Porta Nigra, the "black gate", is a UNESCO world heritage since 1986. The Porta Nigra was the northern gate of the ancient roman city wall of Augusta Treverorum, which was built in the 2nd century AD. The construction probably started around 180 AD and was never completed for unknown reasons. Apparently there were never doors attached in the passageways. Maybe it was only build for representative reasons.
In the Middle Ages, one of the gate towers was partially demolished and the Porta Nigra was converted into a church. In the 19th century, the church was dismanteled and the ancient gate was restored in original condition by Napoleon.
