Germanic Brooch Almgren II, Bronze

Rollenkappen-brooches are garment clasps that were particularly widespread on the Jutland peninsula and in northern Germany and can therefore be clearly identified as a Germanic form. Some pieces are scattered as far as Bohemia, which also makes the settlement of Elbe Germanic tribes there plausible. Some related forms have even been discovered in the Groß-Gerau / Nauheim / Starkenburg area.

Germanic Brooch "Rollenkappenfibel

These fibulae were made of iron, but mainly of bronze and silver. They were named after the special bow construction, whose small, semicircular wings covered and supported the spiral of the needle. A hook, into which the string of the spiral was hooked, is also a striking design feature.
In early times in particular, the needle holder was often open-worked, initially with elaborate ladder-like openings, later with simple drilled holes. The bow knob in the form of a semicircular disc, decorated with beaded wires or notches, is also very typical.
This brooch belongs typologically to group II according to Oskar Almgren and is paralleled by no. 24 listed there. This older type is a leading form of level B1 according to H.-J. Eggers, which covers approximately the first half of the 1st century AD. This brooch form is found exclusively in free Germania and was not used in the Roman provinces.

Handcrafted from solid bronze, fully functional. Length approx. 60 mm. Comes with certificate.
