The symbolism of the snake motif is extremely complex. On the one hand, it is a predator that kills and devours. With the Egyptians, the god of destruction and chaos, Apep or Apophis, appears in the form of a gigantic snake, but on the other hand, as a Uraeus snake on the pharaoh's head, it protects its wearer. In the Old Testament, too, the serpent is the messenger of the devil and brings destruction and devastation, on the other hand the "brazen serpent" in the 4th book of Moses protects the people of Israel from the poison of the snakes in the desert. Many mythological figures and mythical creatures of antiquity make use of the terrifying snake symbolism, such as the gorgon Medusa or the hydra, which the Greek hero Heracles had to face.

In ancient times, the snake can be found in various forms, also in positive contexts. She is assigned to Athena / Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. The snake represents the secret knowledge about life and especially about illness, healing and health. In this meaning she also accompanies Aesculapius (or Greek Asclepius), the ancient god of healing. The taming of the snake also means the victory over chaos and the mastery of its magical properties. In particular, the moulting of the animals was an extremely strong evidence of the magical or divine powers of the snakes, which were able to rejuvenate and renew themselves. They symbolized youth and rebirth, immortality, change and healing.

Images of snakes can also be found again and again in the private house altars of the Romans, the larariums, a manifestation of the Lares Loci or Genius Loci, which, in contrast to the family-bound Lares Familiares, were firmly connected to the place that the house was built. Offerings were intended to protect the house and its occupants from harm.
