Viking Secondary Brooch, Silber
This viking fibula was originally made as a bottom for a box brooch. In the age of the vikings, old jewellry was often repaired or, in the case of this find, replenished by a pin construction for the use as a fibula.
Secondary brooch, silver
A secondary brooch is a piece of jewelry that has been converted into a cloth pin by attaching a additional pin construction at a later date. This could be, for example, ornamental objects such as fish head pendants, but also the bases of other fibulae, where the original, ornate lid had been lost. Gotlandic box brooches in particular had a richly decorated bottom lid in some cases, which could be repaired and reused as a new brooch.
Around 20 finds from individual bottoms of box brooches are decorated in elaborate Jelling or Rune Stone style. The animal ornamentation consists of mythical creatures with eight-shaped bodies. Of these, 3 finds were reworked and reused as secondary brooches.
Our secondary brooch (model made by Thoke Fischer) from the bottom of a box brooch is made of high quality 925 silver and has a diameter of about 60 mm. In addition to the original needle, the piece also has a sturdy iron needle for high loads. If desired, one of the two needles can also be removed.
