Iron gall ink
The main ingredients are ferrous sulphate, gum arabic and galls. While the gum arabic was obtained from the sap of acacia trees, galls are the growths on oak leaves that develop after gall wasps lay their eggs.Iron gall ink has been in use since ancient times right up to the present day. While medieval manuscripts were written exclusively with this ink, it was also used in modern times and even today for important documents and in calligraphy due to its authenticity and durability.Well-known documents written with iron gall ink include the American Declaration of Independence, the Magna Carta, Isaac Newton's theories and letters from Charles Darwin. The ink also found its way into art. Some drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt van Rjin, Vincent van Gogh and scores by Johann Sebastian Bach were written with it.
